Nestlé Nutrition Institute Clinical Nutrition Fellowship for Physicians
The Nestlé Nutrition Institute Clinical Nutrition Fellowship Program for Physicians, an exclusive program developed for the medical or surgical subspecialty fellow or attending physician, who is a U.S. medical graduate currently/previously enrolled in an ACGME- accredited subspecialty fellowship, will foster knowledge of and provide experience with clinical nutrition in the primary care of the acute and chronically ill patient. With the specialized education provided through the Fellowship Program, participants will have the opportunity to advance both their clinical and professional development.
The mission of the Nestlé Nutrition Institute Clinical Nutrition Fellowship Program for Physicians is to foster knowledge of experience with nutrition in the primary care of the acute and chronically ill patient. This exclusive program will train the medical or surgical subspecialty fellow or attending physician to become a physician leader in specialized medical nutrition. In this role, the physician will demonstrate an advanced knowledge of clinical nutrition and influence the development of other healthcare practitioners, with the potential to improve patient outcomes.
The Nestlé Nutrition Institute Clinical Nutrition Fellowship Program for Physicians is designed to provide a learning experience like no other. The Fellowship is based on the following unique experiences:
- Clinical Training: Participants will develop specialized nutrition skills and knowledge through a four week clinical rotation with program faculty. Faculty members are recognized as leaders in the area of nutrition therapy and research. Participants spend two weeks on-site with each of two faculty members. This one-on-one mentoring opportunity provides intense immersion into the science and practice of specialized nutrition support.
- Publication: Working with their faculty mentors during their clinical training, participants will select a primary nutrition topic that will be developed into a clinical review paper and submitted to a journal for publication.
- Professional Association: Participants who complete their rotation and submit a clinical review paper for publication are sponsored to attend the A.S.P.E.N. Clinical Nutrition Week activities the 2019 following their rotations. They are typically involved in delivering a professional presentation during the meeting.
The Nestlé Nutrition Institute Clinical Nutrition Fellowship Program is recognized as fostering quality physician training and development while advancing safe and efficacious patient care. It is endorsed by the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.) and the AGA Institute.
The highly distinguished current program faculty includes Robert G. Martindale, MD, PhD, Professor of Surgery, Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, OR; Stephen A. McClave, MD, Professor of Medicine, University of Louisville School of Medicine, Louisville, KY; Laszlo N. Kiraly, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery, Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, OR, and Keith R. Miller, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care, University of Louisville School of Medicine, Louisville, KY, Ryan T. Hurt, MD, PhD. Medical Director of Home Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Mayo Clinic; Professor of Medicine, Divisions of General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Mayo Clinic. Clinical rotations are scheduled annually in the summer and fall.
