High-Calorie Oral Nutrition Supplements
High-calorie oral nutrition supplements deliver energy-dense nutrition and extra nutrients to patients who are unable to meet their calorie and nutrient needs through their typical diet alone. These supplemental foods and drinks have more calories per serving than standard oral nutrition supplements. People with poor appetite, malnutrition and difficulty eating are most likely to benefit from high-calorie oral nutrition supplements.

The Role of High-Calorie Oral Nutrition Supplements in Patient Care
While oral nutrition supplements help provide important nutrients to fill gaps left in the diet, some patients may require markedly more calories than what a standard oral supplement can provide. That’s where high-calorie oral nutrition supplements can serve a critical role by playing double duty. They typically provide many of the same vitamins and minerals as standard versions, but with more calories per serving.
Malnutrition is a serious health concern. Patients who are unable to meet their calorie and nutrition needs are at greater risk for developing comorbidities or worsening health outcomes related to their current condition. This can lead to longer hospital stays and declining quality of life.1 With adequate calorie intake, patients are more able to support their everyday well-being while also having enough energy to manage chronic or acute conditions.
Sub-optimal energy intake is most often seen in patients with difficulty eating and poor appetite – conditions commonly associated with cancer, malnutrition, liver or gastrointestinal (GI) disease, lung disease like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or emphysema, and conditions associated with aging like dementia.2 Giving patients high-calorie oral nutrition supplements helps them get a concentrated source of energy, plus vitamins and other nutrients, in every serving.
When it comes to increasing calorie intake, it’s important for patients to have options they enjoy and for healthcare professionals to have solutions they feel good about. That’s why Nestlé Health Science has a variety of high-calorie oral nutrition supplement formats and flavors that are backed by science.
