Course Description

This program highlights the clinical outcomes when immunonutrition is applied peri-operatively in the major surgery patient. Increase your knowledge about the synergistic effect of arginine, omega 3 fatty acids, and nucleotides and the evidence that demonstrates positive outcomes in this patient population. Understand the health economics potential for this standard of care in GI cancer surgery patients by use of outcomes data and US hospital data on cost. Presented by Mary Miranowski, RDN, CNSC 

Course Objectives

  1. View the course

    • Discuss the differences and similarities in diagnosis and intervention for Persistent Inflammation, Immunosuppression and Catabolic . Syndrome (PICS) and Post Intensive Care Syndrome-Survivors (PICS-S).
    • Describe the mitochondrial and inflammatory changes seen in PICS and PICS-S.
    • Identify the importance and role of nutrition in PICS and PICS-S management.

1. Explain the basic science for use of supplemental immunonutrients in helping to reduce the risk of post-operative infectious complications 
2. Describe the clinical outcomes demonstrated in the literature when peri-operative use of arginine supplemented immunonutrition is applied in major elective surgery 
3. Discuss how the health economics associated with this nutrition intervention support the implementation of quality initiatives in major elective surgery
